I have spent three decades inside companies that were scaling, breaking, or being built from nothing — Disney, Tesla, CarsDirect, and a string of my own. The common thread is complicated operations turned into systems that people can actually run.

Preconstruction systems

Tesla Energy

Ninety days became one.

Situation
Preconstruction ran ninety days per project. The number was treated as physics — absorbed into every forecast, never questioned. The function was a pure cost center.
What I did
I did not optimise the ninety days. I threw out the sequence and rebuilt it around what actually had to be true at each gate, then automated everything that did not require a human decision.
Outcome
A single day, start to finish. The department stopped dragging on margin and started producing it.

DREEMS — asset management

Disney Interactive

Nobody assigned it. It is still running.

Situation
Assets were scattered across teams with no system of record. Everybody worked around it. Nobody owned it, because it was not anybody's job.
What I did
I designed and built DREEMS — a system of record for digital assets — without being asked, on the theory that the problem was not going to fix itself.
Outcome
It went into production and stayed there. Three decades later it is still in use. The people who built it are long gone. The system is not.

CarsDirect

A whiteboard sketch that became $3B.

Situation
I joined when the company was a drawing on a whiteboard. Early internet, no category, no playbook to copy. Every operational question was being answered for the first time.
What I did
I built the internal systems while the company scaled underneath them, choosing architecture that could survive an order-of-magnitude change in volume rather than the fastest thing that worked that quarter.
Outcome
The company reached a $3B valuation. I learned what scale does to a system that was not designed to take it — and what it does to one that was.
